You will be surprised, but the first “tool” you will need for the start is … the pattern. Why? Usually, each pattern contains the supplies guide so you will know what exactly you will need for your project.

Usually every pattern contains the name and producer of the featured yarn, yarn alternatives, yarn weight and quantity in meters/skeins you will need for the project. This helps you to choose correct supplies and start project quickly.

Attention here! The yarn label may indicate a different size of the hook or knitting needles than the pattern. Personal advice - to go with the number indicated in the pattern. I oftern use bigger hook sizes for some yarn weights to create less heavy and "bigger" stitches effect. A lot of designers do the same.
