Why I decided to refresh the pattern template

Since my patterns store launched at the end of 2021, I update the templates each year based on your feedback to make my patterns easier to work with and include all the details you might need.

This year, I was thinking about how I can adapt my patterns to be for any skill level and inspire intentional making rather than making for making’s sake. I looked through all the questions and feedback I received from you in the last 4 years and integrated new features in the existing patterns, transforming them into an e-book with a workbook.

What Changed in the New Templates

I switched to a cleaner and easier-to-read template with new fonts and neutral colors that match the SWD brand. The e-book feels like a paper book and can be printed for personal use as a binder or as a book.
More white space and easier-to-read charts and glossaries make it easier on the eye to flow from one paragraph to another.
Separation into chapters is also a new feature: you will find inside five separate blocks (or steps of the project) to improve readability and workflow. For each blanket pattern, I included instructions for matching or coordinated hat or bonnet to create a lovely set.

New Maker-Centered Features

The new e-book and workbook template includes many maker-centered features, making it more beginner-friendly.

Features for beginners: stitch and terms (US vs UK) glossary, pattern reading guide with charts.

The supplies section “You will need” has useful information about fibers, a quick yarn swap chart, a checklist, and baby-safe fiber recommendations. Plus, you will find a link to the online yarn swap tool for fast swap options search.

My favorite new features are the planner and the “Making Diary” chapter. I wanted my pattern feel like a scrapbook for the person who will work with it. And this chapter adds the scrapbook vibe. You can print it as a binder and write your notes and reflections, and indicate the tools and yarns used for the project.

Project tracker and planner parts are for those who have many open WIPs and struggle to complete them.

“Making Diary” has a space for ready item photos. I included this feature so you can add your memories and use this binder or book as a keepsake for you or your child. Imagine working on a blanket for your baby or grandchild and 20 years later, giving him or her the pattern book with your notes, photos, and yarn strands? What a great gift it will make!

The E-book Design Philosophy

Moving into a new home bigger than the previous one, I realized how much overconsuming we do in all areas of our lives, including crafts. Packing my stuff, I discovered folders with patterns I never made, bags and boxes full of yarns collecting dust, as I had no idea what to make with them. In a new house, I had no space for them either. What a waste!

This year’s experiences have changed my approach to crafting. I am shifting towards more intention and mindfulness. And I want my patterns and my designs inspire the same.

Making with a purpose.

Quality over quantity.

Mastering your skills, building them up.

Crafting with calm and pleasure.

Crafting that brings joy.

Items made to last and to be cherished by your family for years to come.

The new e-book template combined function, intention, and minimal, quiet beauty. All that I wanted my pattern books to reflect. I grew up in Latvia, in a country with a strong Scandinavian lifestyle. I believe that this, more than anything else, influenced my love of simplicity.

Happy making 🙂
